Minutes from April meeting

Our meeting was very well attended. We had 35 plus or minus members, several of them new. We intro-
duced ourselves and heard in brief of the many talents and directions among us. In particular, Joshua Gass
invited us to join in the "Kabang" festival which is planned for August 6-14 here in Bangor and features
developing artists in film, visual arts and music. More info can be found at www.kahbang.com

Judith Long invited us to take part in the seniors over 50 art exhibit starting Thursday, May 13th. Friday will
feature demonstrations of matting and framing, pottery and oil painting, and on Saturday at noon, a lecture on
the life and work of LInden Frederick. These activities will be held at the Hutchinson Center at Belfast. (Rte.
3 just beyond the old NBNA building). For more information, call the Senior College. The events close on Sunday the 16th at 3 pm but paintings can remain hanging through June. No 3D works.

Rebecca Rivers is having her opening reception at Eastern Maine Community College on Wednesday,
May 5, 4-6 pm

We had our election and our new president will be Carol Brooks and our new vice president will be Ulrike
Guthrie. Our congratulations to them both!

The juried show is upon us with entrees to be brought to the library this Saturday, April 30th, from 10 - 12,
The opening reception will take place Tuesday, May 11, from 5:30 – 7:30 pm Helena is the refreshment
chairperson and hopes for a good culinary turnout. Donations happily accepted.

We are reminded that the Portland Museum of Art is just now sending out invitations to enter its biennial
juried show.

Paint Bangor Day is planned for September 11th this year. Register at the Masonic Center (the former
Theological Seminary) 8-10 am that day.

Our program for the evening had both a critique of members work and a show of several of our winter proj
ject, the rest of which will be viewed at the May meeting. Many thanks to Dave Haskins for officiating here
and for his time and caring as our outgoing vice president. And to Kris as our present president, many thanks for doing a superb job and bringing our society into a new position of excellence and community recognition

Changing of the Guard by Kris Whitney

How time flies. Looking back, it seems unthinkable that three years have passed since I took on the presidency of
The Bangor Art Society, but here we are ready to pass the torch forward to new leadership.

I came onboard after serving one year as JoAnne Houlsen’s vice president with a head full of ideas, fully expecting
there would be some uphill battles. I was pleasantly surprised that most members were quite supportive of many
of the things I proposed, and fortunately that support translated into more than words. Many jumped right in to
help implement a variety of projects and changes—without that commitment, little would have been accomplished,
so to all of those wonderful people, my heartfelt thanks for all your selfless work. To Dave, my vice president,
thank you for completely changing how publicity was done, as well as for all your other work and good ideas.

To the incoming leaders—Carol Brooks, our new president, and Uli Guthrie, the new vice president, welcome
aboard.

New Art Supply Store in Town

Remember the good old days when we could go downtown to Penobscot Paint and buy our art supplies from
Fred? Well Fred is back now at Aubuchon Hardware in Penobscot Plaza, selling top quality art supplies. Wel-
come back, Fred, and thanks Aubuchon’s.
