Artist's Statement

If asked to define my paintings, I would say they are landscapes. All of my paintings are rooted in the land, and most are rooted in the landscape of my native Iceland, and others are inspired by the beauty and character of other places I have called home for the last 25 years. They are landscapes of angles and relationships, and always light, most completely rooted in the realm of the arctic "Arctic Eve"is a clear,startlingly cold night, filled with that arctic light, with northern lights, with a feeling of where I come from in the deepest sense. There is a bold starkness that is Iceland. And there is that underlying fire that is there too. And in all of that, I see strength and the way contradictory elements come together to make each other survive, thrive, go beyond into jubilation.

I work in acrylics and watercolors because of the immediacy with which I can capture the light, the color, the boldness, the extravagance that what I see demands. I always build the entire image in my mind, and then begin.
