Artist's Statement

When I first began painting, I worked in watercolors, painting landscapes, flowers, birds…whatever struck my fancy. After about five years, I briefly worked in acrylics but then returned to watercolors because I missed using them. A few years ago, I gleefully discovered Yupo paper, loving the fluid texture this synthetic paper gave to my watercolor paintings, which became brighter and bolder because I could play with the paint and move it around. And using Yupo paper freed me up to experiment more with spontaneous composition. Although I still love watercolors, this past year, I started working in pastels, and I am completely hooked, so much so that even though I’m allergic to them and have to wear a mask when using them, I can’t put them down. When painting with pastels, my love of color, line, and design has blossomed. Pastels have freed me up even more; I’m still painting landscapes, but I am now trying my hand at abstracts.
