Artist's Statement
I am a painter of people, nature, florals, interiors, wild life, landscapes and still lives.
The image evolves, at times, from year’s past, sometimes inspired from vague dreams for the future, often from the rushing pressure of now; as when I watched Aretha sing the National Anthem at President Obama’s inauguration. Her expression moved me to tears whilst her hat grounded her in life and spoke supremely of her ethnic presence. I had to paint her!
The subject evokes the elected medium. I work in oil, pastel, conte’, acrylic, pen and ink, prismacolor pencil, water medium and a mix thereof, paying close attention to quality and conservation.
I love working with wood, velvet. I love the sun in my face. My hands sculpt each medium so that often I cannot differentiate between them. At my best, I am both lost and found in the process -- free and breathing it all in.
