Pastel White Rose
Artist's Statement
I love color whether it is in a painting, fabric, architecture, landscape or my surroundings. I think that my love of color came to a level of excitement for me when I started spending time in San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. The vibrant color is all around in San Miguel – in the buildings, the landscape, the markets with fresh vegetables and fruits of all kinds, the pottery and tiles handmade by Mexican artists and the sun in San Miguel produces a golden light that is the reason so many artists come to paint the beauty and vivid color of San Miguel de Allende.
My home is actually in Maine which has a beauty all its own. Each season in Maine has a special beauty and with its coastline, wooded rural areas and quaint harbors, it is no wonder that so many artists come to Maine to paint in all media. About three years ago I started painting with oil and acrylic which I really enjoyed and I stayed with that medium for two years. Then my sister Sue encouraged me to join her in a Pastel class being taught by Linda Packard. I had never painted with pastel but I gave it a try and from the first class I was thrilled with the vibrant color of this medium and the method of building of color in layers and the immediate gratification I felt as I could finish a painting in one day. I was hooked.
Art for me is a creative outlet that apparently is a passion for me because I lose all track of time when I am painting and working with color. I also quilt which is another one of my passions that allows me to create with color in fabric.
