Wylie Elise Beckert
Artist's Statement and Bio
Darkness and whimsy are the chief inhabitants of artist Wylie Elise Beckert's illustrations. The simultaneously grim and playful images she creates are distinguished by vivid characters and an emphasis on storytelling, offering a window into a world that is both sinister and inviting.
Wylie spent her childhood mired in somewhat morbid Old World fairy tales, and went on to achieve a lofty degree in studio art from the University of California. Her lifetime of practice and training in the arts, combined with her love of the darker side of children's literature, left her with an imaginative sense of style, a strong grasp of visual tools, and a tendency to jump at small noises.
Her illustrations are a combination of traditional and digital media, incorporating precise pencil linework with muted colors, rich textures, and a dramatic balance of light and dark. Her work has most recently found itself in children's book art, magazine illustrations, character design, and animation, but is at home anywhere there is a story to be told.
